Mad Charcoal
American, b. 1995
Josh Hernandez, born in 1995 in Los Angeles, is known by his moniker Mad Charcoal. A self-taught charcoal virtuoso, he crafts emotive portraits that blend realism with abstraction"the grey area between realism and abstraction", layering charcoal to create rich textures and contrasts.
After a Bachelor of Science in Design from Arizona State University and a career in graphic design, he returned to traditional drawing; his work has amassed over 8 million followers across social media and joined The Fine Art Auction's roster in January 2025.
